The author, Jane Austen, lived in the Chawton area of Alton for the last years of her life. As well as several plays, poems and collections of letters, Jane Austen wrote the novels 'Sense and Sensibility' and 'Pride and Prejudice' amongst other classics. In 1809, Jane came to live at the Chawton cottage, and in the following year, the final draft of 'Sense and Sensibility' was written. It was first published in 1811 and went on sale for 15 shillings. 'First Impressions' was also written whilst at Chawton in 1812, and given the new title 'Pride and Prejudice'. It was sold for 18 shillings when first published later that year. The cottage has now become 'Jane Austen's House’; a popular tourist attraction and museum dedicated to her life and works. |
