Family of William GROSSMITH (G3) and Sarah EARL

G4 Thomas GROSSMITH

Born on 23 February 1765 in Bletchingley Surrey.

Thomas died in Bletchingley Surrey on 7 February 1841, at the age of 75. Cause of death: Typhoid Fever.

Occupation: Glover.

Thomas was born and died in the village of Bletchingley, Surrey. However he married in Tandridge in 1785 and his seven children were all born and baptised in Tandridge.

He is recorded in the 1823 edition of Pigot’s Surrey Directory as a breeches maker and glover in Bletchingley.

In 1785 when Thomas was 19, he married Eleanor MUGGERIDGE, in Tandridge, Surrey.

Eleanor was born about 1761. Eleanor died in 1827, at the age of 66. She was buried on 13 April 1827 in Bletchingley Surrey.

The witnesses at the marriage were John Caning and William King. Eleanor made her mark "X".

They had the following children:

William (19 March 1786 Tandridge -25 July 1875 Westerham, aged 89)
William first married Amelia BALDWIN, a widow.William second married Sarah.

Mary (3 March 1793 Tandridge -)
On 13 July 1816 when Mary was 23, she married James HOLLANDS, in Tandridge, Surrey

Tandridge

In Thomas GROSSMITH’s time, Tandridge was a tiny village near Bletchingley, which was the ‘Borough’ and a trading centre. Today, the Tandridge District is very rural and over 90% is covered by Green Belt. The area borders Reigate and Redhill in the west, Croydon in the north, Westerham and Sevenoaks to the east and East Grinstead to the south.
Outwood boasts one of the oldest working windmills, built in 1666, Titsey Place, a 17th century mansion, has a fine collection of art and extensive gardens, Lingfield is home to Lingfield Park Racecourse and Nutfield to Redhill Aerodrome.
