Family of Thomas GROSSMITH (G4) and Eleanor MUGGERIDGE

G5 Thomas GROSSMITH

Born on 13 April 1796 in Tandridge, Surrey.

Recorded residing at 194 Western Road, Brighton in 1842.

Thomas died in Brighton on 8 October 1842, at the age of 46. Cause of death: Paralysis.

Occupation: Breeches Maker and Glover.

On 1 June 1818 when Thomas was 22, he first married Sarah SMITH, in Westerham, Kent.

They had the following children:

G7a Elizabeth Harriet (1821 Bletchingley- 1892 Melbourne, Australia, aged 71)
On 25 November 1849 when Elizabeth Harriet was 28, she married Henry EVEREST, in St George, Southwark

William (1830 Bletchingley Surrey -1916)

On 22 February 1836 when Thomas was 39, he second married Harriet Emma Francis, in St Leonards Shoreditch, Middlesex.

They had one child:

Jemima - Born on 12 August 1837. Jemima died in September 1837.

Thomas continued his father's businesses as a Breeches Maker and Glover, but it is not clear where he traded. Although he was born in Tandridge, he married in Westerham in 1818. His first two children were born between in 1819 and 1821 in Bletchingley. Two children were born between 1824 and 1826 in Merstram, and then the last two children were born between 1828 and 1830 in Bletchingley. Thomas died in Brighton in 1842.

G6 George GROSSMITH

Born in 1805 in Tandridge, Surrey. George was baptized in Tandridge, Surrey on 16 June 1805.

About 1825 when George was 20, he married Mary Ann Wood (1808-1876)

They had the following children:

Mary Ann (1844)

Julia (1848)

The family is recorded in the 1851 Census living at 1 Wandle Terrace, Garrett Lane, St Annes, Wandsworth.

George second married Emma Waters in 1850 and has the following children:

Ann (1851)

George (1853-1881)

Arthur (1856-1875)

Walter (1857-1919)

Walter married Emma Maria Aslett in 1880 and had four children: Ada Louisa (1883-1970), Walter George William (1885) Emma Rose (1881) and Arthur Charles (1887).

Janet Jessamy of New Barnet, Herts is researching this branch of the family.

Emma was murdered in 1868. News items about the case appear in the Times on the 9 May, 19 May, 27 May 3 June and 21 August 1868. Eighteen year old Alexander Arthur McKay, a waiter, was executed in Newgate Prison on 8 September 1868 after admitting brutally killing his employer's wife Mrs Grossmith.

George third marries Charlotte Lydamantin 1870 and had one child:

        Ada Emily Grossmith
