Fifth Generation Family of Richard PLOWMAN (P8) and Sarah P10 Richard PLOWMANBorn in 1805 in Croydon. Recorded residing at 10 Kings Street, Croydon in 1856. Occupation: Basket Maker. On 11 April 1830 when Richard was 25, he married Mary Ann PRIVETT, in St Mary, Newington, Surrey. She was born about 1812. They had the following children: P15 Richard (1831 Croydon -) Sarah Ann (6 September 1835 Croydon -) On 14 November 1869 when Sarah Ann was 34, she married James LONG, in South Kennington St Barnabos. P16 William George (1835 Croydon -) Anna Maria (29 December 1837 Croydon -) Mary Ann (10 March 1844 Croydon -) In 1856, Richard Plowman had a business at 10 King Street, Croydon. He sold the business to his brother Charles for £20.
Richard agreed not to set up business in Croydon.
P11 Henry PLOWMAN Born in 1807 and christened on 11 February 1807 in Reigate, Surrey. Recorded residing at 5 Surrey Street in 1851 and at 70 Scarbrook Hill Croydon in 1861. Occupation: Butcher, Appraiser and Insurance Broker. In November 1830 when Henry was 23, he first married Mary Ann FREESTONE, in Norwood, Surrey.
They had the following children: Mary Ann (2 November 1831 Croydon -) On 9 November 1845 when Mary Ann was 14, she married Edwin BALDWIN, in Croydon St John the Baptist. Sarah (20 January 1836 Croydon -) Elizabeth (20 January 1836 Croydon -) Louisa (27 October 1838 - 20 August 1839 Croydon, aged 1 year) Henry (1841 Croydon -) Occupation: Carpenter Maria (1843 Croydon -) Louisa (1849 Croydon -) Mary Ann (daughter of Henry PLOWMAN) and cousin Richard (son of Richard PLOWMAN) were baptised on the same day at St Johns Croydon. Before 1861 when Henry was 54, he second married Eliza CHARLWOOD.
Henry is listed in 1841 Census living in Surrey Street, Croydon aged 30 with wife Mary, 30 and children Mary 9, Sarah 7 Elizabeth 5 and Henry 11 months. His occupation is given as a Butcher. He is listed in Croydon Street Directories trading as an Appraiser and Broker at 5 Surrey Street between 1851 and 1855. In the 1851 Census he is recorded as still living at 5 Surrey Street, widowed and aged about 40, with Sarah 17, Elizabeth 15, Henry 10, Maria 8 and Luisa 2. His occupation is given as Insurance Broker. In the 1861 Census he is recorded living at 70 Scarbrook Hill, Croydon (the former home of William BROOKS), aged 51, with second wife Eliza, 49 and her nephew Thomas, 21, a groom, Henry Plowman, 20 and a lodger William Lippencott, 60 a county court bailiff. Henry’s occupation is now given as a Furniture Dealer and Appraiser.
P12 George PLOWMAN Born in 1809 in Croydon Surrey and christened on 7 January 1810 in St John The Baptist, Croydon, Surrey. George died in Bell Street, Reigate on 30 October 1860, at the age of 51, of cirrhosis of the liver. Occupation: Basket Maker. He had a shop in Bell Street, Reigate. On 17 June 1832 when George was 23, he married Caroline ROBINSON, in Mitcham Surrey.
They had the following children: George (12 January 1834 Croydon -). On 25 September 1869 when George was 35, he married Elizabeth NEW, in Camberwell St Giles. Amy (17 May 1836 Croydon -). James (2 October 1835 Croydon-) Caroline (30 August 1840-) Eliza (14 May 1842) Benjamin (31 December 1843 - 6 January 1845, died aged 1 year) Charles (3 December 1845 Reigate -). Walter Henry (30 December 1848 Reigate -) Susannah (11 November 1850 Reigate -)
P13 Charles PLOWMAN Born in 1816 in Croydon, Surrey and christened on 28 July 1816 in St John The Baptist, Croydon, Surrey. Recorded residing in Overton’s Yard, Surrey Street, Croydon in 1853; and at 43 Surrey Street, Croydon in 1859. Charles died in Croydon, Surrey on 9 May 1864, at the age of 48. He was buried on 14 May 1864 in Queens Road Cemetery, Croydon. Occupation: Master Basket Maker. Religion: Anglican. On 8 July 1839 when Charles was 23, he married Mary Ann POTTER, in Norwood.
On his marriage certificate, 8 July 1839, Charles was listed as a basket maker living in Norwood. His father Richard had already died. Charles had signed the certificate, but Mary Ann Potter obviously couldn't as she made 'her mark'. Nine years later Mary Ann still unable to write when she registered the birth of their son William as 8pm on 6 February 1846 with the address as Overton’s Yard Croydon. They had the following children: Mary Ann (27 May 1842 Croydon -<1851). William Charles Arthur (>1842 Croydon < 1851) Elizabeth Amelia (>1842 Croydon -). Emma (11 June 1848 Croydon -) Emma married Matthew BENNETT (1844 in Cutcombe, Somerset Occupation: Builder). P17 William (1848 Croydon –1919 Croydon) Henry Charles (January 1851 Croydon -) Resided in Surrey Street, Croydon in 1881. Occupation: Zinc Worker. Mary Jane (1854 Croydon -) Occupation: Dressmaker Daniel (<1854 Croydon -) Charles is listed in 1841 Census living in Surrey Street, age 25, a basket maker, with wife Mary, 20. In the 1851 Census he is living at Overton’s Yard, Surrey Street, age 38, a basket maker, with wife Mary, 34 and children Emma, 6 William, 3 and Henry Charles 2 months He then appears in Croydon Street Directories trading as a Basket Maker at Overton’s Yard, Surrey Street, Croydon between 1853 and 1855. In 1856, Richard Plowman had a business at 10 King Street. In 1856 he sold the business to his brother Charles for £20.

In the 1861 Census he is living at 43 Surrey Street, age 38, a basket maker, with wife Mary, 45 and children William, 14 and Henry Charles 10 Mary Jane, 7 After he died in 1864, his wife Mary carried on running the business.
