The Meaning of the Name PLOWMAN Plowman means one who ploughs the fields, or one who makes or sells ploughs. Every nationality has its own "plowman". The Germans have 'Plohmann", "ploh" meaning "Plow" in Low German (those who lived in the lowlands along the Baltic Coast). There is also a "Plau" spelling. The Dutch have Ploegman. In Caithness (Scotland) there were families known as PLEWMAN in the early 1700s but by the mid-to-late 1700s they were known as PLOWMAN. There are references to PLOWMAN in Parish Records going back to at least 1590. The earliest ancestor traced is John PLOWMAN born about 1680 in Sutton, Surrey. |
My Family Tree is a 60 minute documentary that I have made with my digital camcorder and edited into a video production. This documentary is the story of four families. It is the story of my father's parents, Brigden and Chapman, and my mother's parents, Crowhurst and Plowman. The video can be purchased for £5 plus £2 postage and packaging.
